Obituary

Services for William O. "Sonny" Shankles, Jr., 75, of the Shady Dale Community will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, June 29, 2018, in the Shady Dale Baptist Church with Jerry Harper officiating, assisted by Rev. John Sconce. Interment in the Burneyville Cemetery, Burneyville, OK, will immediately follow the service.

Sonny was born at Burneyville on June 15, 1943, the son of William Otis "Buster" Shankles and Geneva Kitchens Shankles and passed away Tuesday, June 26, in Mercy Health Love County, Marietta.

A lifelong resident of the Marietta area, Sonny graduated from Turner High School with the class of 1961. A rancher and team roper, he was the Central Rodeo Association Champion Team Roper in both 1977 and 1980, roping with his son Kent and Bruce Mobley. Sonny also worked at Marietta Sportswear for several years. He and Sheilah Dianne Sconce were married in Gainesville, TX on May 12, 1999. Sonny loved to go fishing, especially with his grandson Zack, and play golf. He also enjoyed camping at Lebanon and cooking fish for family and friends. Sonny was a member of the Shady Dale Baptist Church.

Preceding him in death were his parents; and son, Van Zimmerman, Jr.

Survivors include his wife, Sheilah of the home; son, Kent Shankles and wife Tonja of Jimtown, OK; two daughters, Tonya Spanglo and husband Bobby of Marietta, and Tiffany Zimmerman of Ardmore, OK; three brothers, Charles Shankles and wife Sue of Shady Dale, Don Shankles and wife Cissy of Granbury, TX, and Troy Shankles and wife Anita of Burneyville; three sisters, Sylvia Stewart of Ardmore, Linda Stewart of Burneyville, and Vickie Shankles of Lake Texoma; eight grandchildren, Kenja Shankles, Lindsey Ramon, Kilee Vinson, Zack Spanglo, Crystal Hicks, Courtney Hicks, Elizabeth Spradlin, and Jessie Zimmerman; four great-grandchildren, Grayson Ramon, Makynle Spradlin, Lily Zimmerman, and Alyssa Spradlin; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Serving as casket bearers are Tony Stewart, Doug Kirk, Brent Sykora, Ricky Teafatiller, Luke Vinson, and Mark Muller. Honorary bearers are the ladies at Dr. J's office (Ardmore Cancer Center) and his camping and fishing buddies.
