William Henry Thompson of Marietta, OK, 85, passed away peacefully in his home on March 26, 2012. A unique blend of sailor and rancher, his word was his bond. Bill's outspoken personality and sense of humor are remembered by all who knew him. Born August 26, 1926 to Margaret (Wicker) and Robert Henry Thompson, Bill graduated in 1944 from Marietta High School, then enlisted in the Navy at age 17. He served his country from 1944-1951 and fought proudly in WWII and the Korean War. A decorated hero, Bill received the following honors: WWII Victory medal, Pacific Campaign medal, American Campaign medal, National Events Campaign medal, Liberty Campaign medal, and the Asian Occupation Service medal. On leave one weekend, he married the light of his life, Wanda Rose Michael of Love County. Together they reared a son, Robert Henry (Mick). After being honorably discharged, Bill served as the Assistant Postmaster of the Poteau Post Office while living as a rancher in nearby Panama, OK. After retirement, Bill and Rose returned to Marietta in 1994. An avid historian, Bill was a charter member of the Love County Military Museum in Marietta. As a consummate horseman, he, Rose and their two grandsons traveled and competed in horse shows. Bill won World Champion Appaloosa Men's Costume in 1983, '84 and '87. Wearing full Native American regalia, Bill, Rose and their grandsons participated in many parades and events. Bill was a long-time member and leader of the First United Methodist Church, Marietta. Bill is survived by his beautiful wife, Rose; son, Mick Thompson and wife Peggy of Edmond, OK; two grandsons, Scott Thompson and wife Heather, Michael Thompson and wife Stephanie; a great-granddaughter, Micah Faith Thompson; two great-grandsons, Brennan and Garrett Thompson; a step-granddaughter, Sarah Sharpe; a nephew, Preston Chambers; and many extended family members. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Francis Chambers; and daughter-in-law, Toni (Floyd) Thompson. Honorary bearers are Jerry Kerr, Roger Kite, Sue Bankston, Lavon Coyle, Fayrond Balch and Rose Chambers.
