Wanda Van
Hicks-Miller
April 5, 1935 – June 21, 2023
Wanda Hicks-Miller was born "near" Tecumseh, Oklahoma to JK and Ruby (Edwards) Hooley, April 5th, 1935, the youngest of 14 children. She passed from this earthly life at the OU Medical Center in OKC, OK at the age of 88 years old.
She was married to Burney Dewan Hicks in Marietta, OK on February 27th, 1954. Together for 46 years, they raised three children, a daughter, Rene' Hicks Miller, and two sons, the late Jeffrey Paul Hicks, and Gary Shane Hicks.
Wanda was an outstanding homemaker, and a fabulous cook. She excelled in the domestic arts of gardening, baking, and sewing. She enjoyed spending time in the outdoors-fishing, hunting, and camping. She loved family gatherings, fish frys, and late-night domino games.
She was an active and faithful member of the International Pentecostal Holiness denomination. She had a beautiful voice and loved to sing harmonies, singing in trios with her brother-in-law, Nolan Hicks, and her sister Jackie, and later with her daughter and niece, Merle Ann Miller.
Burney and Wanda lived in various towns throughout Oklahoma, as well as Texas and Colorado. She and her infant daughter flew to Hawaii where they lived for several months while Burney was stationed there in the Navy. After their children were grown, they settled in Moore, OK.
When Burney had to retire because of a disability, she began working in long-term care facilities as a nurse aide and in social services. She eventually became the assistant administrator at Southpark Health Care Center after receiving her administrative degree from Oklahoma University in 1986, where she was employed for 14 years. Wanda was very proud of her work at Southpark. To her, it wasn't a job, it was her calling.
When their home in Moore was destroyed by the May 1999 tornado, Wanda retired and they moved back to Ponca City to be closer to their daughter and family as Burney's health began to decline. He passed away in July of 2000.
Wanda was married to the late Miles Miller, Sr of Ponca City in January of 2002. They were together for 15 years until his passing in August of 2017.
She moved to El Reno to live with her son Shane for a short time, returning to Ponca City in 2019 where she eventually began residing at Shawn Manor until the time of her death.
Wanda was a Christ-follower from her childhood. She loved to pray and read her Bible, reading through it over twenty times. She attended LifeSprings Family Worship Center in Ponca City where she would proudly tell you her grandson-in-law is the pastor. She faithfully financially supported her church and up to 12 different IPHC missionaries and their families for many years.
She loved to tell people about Jesus and to pray with them. Residents and staff at the nursing home told her daughter that the last few days before the medical event that took her life, she had been walking around through the nursing home praying for, and witnessing to, and encouraging everyone she came in contact with. At 80+ years of age, she volunteered at the local Mission, feeding the poor and homeless. She loved and lived to serve, and she served well.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and her 13 siblings: J.R., Jewel, Opal, Warren, Loyd, Willie Earl & Lawrence Mearl (Larry), R. Tom, Marion, Charles, Ella Mae & Josie Faye, and Goldie Ann (Jackie); by her husband Burney, son Jeffrey Paul, and her husband Miles, Sr.
She is survived by her daughter, Dewanna Rene' (Hicks) Miller and husband Miles, Jr. of Ponca City; her son, Gary Shane Hicks of El Reno; 10 grandchildren, and 20 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services are scheduled for 10:00 A.M., Saturday, July 1, 2023, at the Flanagan-Watts Funeral Home Chapel in Marietta, OK, with Mr. Chris Rush officiating. Interment will follow at the Jimtown Cemetery in Jimtown, OK. A time for visitation will be held at the funeral home on Friday, from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M.
The casket bearers will be Trey Miller, Steven McGrew, Toran Vietta, Randy Hicks, Gaither Hicks and Steve Reed.
Memorial contributions may be made to the IPHC World Missions, or her home church, LifeSprings Family Worship Center, 621 West Grand Avenue, Ponca City, OK 74601.
