Vonqueta Murel Hicks, 84-year-old Burneyville, OK resident, passed away Sunday, June 23, 2024, in the North Texas Regional Medical Center in Gainesville, TX. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, June 28, 2024, at the Burneyville Baptist Church with Bro. Brett Alberda and Bro. Rob Lee officiating. Interment will follow in the Jimtown Cemetery in Jimtown, OK. Visitation will be held Thursday from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. at the Flanagan-Watts Funeral Home, Marietta, OK.
Vonqueta began this life on March 11, 1940, in Burneyville the daughter of Raymond and Edith (Barfield) Shankles. She grew up in Burneyville and attended schools there until her junior year. Vonqueta graduated from Meadowbrook with the Class of 1958. On September 2, 1958, she married Marion Hicks in Oklahoma City, OK. The two have celebrated more than 65 years together.
Early in their married life Vonqueta and Marion lived in Norman and later moved to Dallas, TX, then to Florida, and then to Houston, TX before settling in Love County in 1998. While in Houston, Vonqueta worked for Sears in the collections department for more than 37 years. She also became quite a socialite and enjoyed hosting parties at Rice University in Houston.
Upon returning to Oklahoma, Vonqueta took on the role of caretaker for her mother. She also continued her role as the family record keeper as she kept track of all the family birthdays and anniversary dates. In her spare time, Vonqueta loved to go shopping and couponing. She also loved playing Bingo and talking to friends and family on the telephone. Vonqueta and Marion were also both recognized in 2020 as the Frontier Days King and Queen, however due to COVID, the event was canceled. So, the Frontier Days committee carried over the nomination to 2021 where the couple were recognized as King and Queen once again.
Vonqueta was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Billy Shankles; and infant sister, Dorothy Shankles. Those left to cherish her memory are her husband, Marion; son, Nolen Hicks and wife Donna of Jimtown; daughter, Marilyn Emerson and husband Eddie of Montgomery, TX; grandchildren, James Hicks and wife LeeAnn, Jeff Hicks, Vanessa Newman and husband Gregory, Cody Emerson and wife Katy; great-grandchildren, Alek Hicks and wife Chelsea, Tyler Hicks, Hagen Hicks, Madysen Hicks, Tarah Riggs, Caden Hicks, Ashtyn Newman, Urijah Newman, Lexis Hicks, Christopher Hicks, Braden Newman, Bentley Hicks; great-great grandchildren, Kyler Hicks, Blakelynn Hicks, and Baby Reese is on the way; special niece Rhonda Fox; special nephew Rod Shankles and wife Melissa; and numerous cousins.
Casket bearers are James Hicks, Jeff Hicks, Cody Emerson, Vanessa Newman, Alek Hicks, and Caden Hicks. Honorary bearers are LeeAnn Hicks, Gregory Newman, Katy Emerson, Madysen Hicks, Hagen Hicks, Lexis Hicks, Chris Hicks, Bentley Hicks, and Tyler Hicks.
The family asks that those who wish to honor Vonqueta through donation, please remember the Jimtown Cemetery or the Burneyville Baptist Church.
