Obituary

On the afternoon of Wednesday, August 3, 2022, Virginia Ann Akins Sturgis of Wichita Falls, TX, also known by her friends and family as "Ginger," went to be with our Lord and Savior at the age of 83 after battling congestive heart failure.  At her side, were her loving Savior, Christ Jesus, her husband, and two daughters.

Since 1999, she battled breast cancer twice and colon cancer twice.  On all accounts she won and Jesus healed her; thus, extending her life another 23 years allowing her to be blessed with 2 more grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.  For this we are all deeply grateful.

Ginger was born in Ravia, Oklahoma on April 11, 1939, to the late Emmett Eugene Akins and Quinnie Beatrice Futch Akins. She was preceded in death by her 6 brothers: Thomas Eugene, Willie May, John Henry, Forest Junior, Albert William, and Bobby Gene, and her 4 sisters: Lucille, Evelyn May, Madie Lee and Lahomia Darleen.  She was the youngest of the 12 children.

Ginger graduated Salutatorian of her class in 1957 at Ravia High School.  She met her loving and devoted husband, Harry Everett Edwin Sturgis, while he was stationed at Sheppard Air Force Base in Wichita Falls, Texas.  They were married in 1958 and have been happily married for almost 64 years.  She faithfully supported and helped advance his distinguished military career of more than 21 years. He would lovingly call her his "angel."  Harry and Ginger were blessed with twin daughters, MaLissa and LaTressa, in 1962.

Ginger enjoyed cooking, sewing, and growing exotic flowers, especially orchids and hibiscus. She was an active member of the Red River Orchid Society for many years and a long-time member of the Wichita Falls Sewing Guild where she taught classes sharing her knowledge and skills to many other sewing enthusiasts.  She also enjoyed creating extraordinary porcelain dolls with features that resembled her grandchildren.

Ginger, most of all, loved being a MeMe and spoiling her 6 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.  She loves Christ Jesus, is a born-again Christian and now resides in Heaven with a completely healed and pain-free body.

She is survived by her husband, Harry of Wichita Falls, TX, her daughters MaLissa Sturgis of Dripping Springs, TX and LaTressa Woods and her husband Ronald Woods, Jr., M.D., of Sherman, TX and their 6 children, Zshona, Skylar, Carlissa, Talen, Rhayne, and Brayden; and 3 great-grandchildren, Alexander, Christian and Clarke.  She is also survived by her older sister, Joyce Beatrice Peek of Stratford, OK.
