V. Christine
Lain
February 19, 1936 – September 16, 2022
Virgie Christine Lain, 86-year-old Burneyville, OK resident, passed away Friday, September 16, 2022, at the Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital in Denton, TX. The funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, September 21, 2022, in the Ardmore Seventh-Day Adventist Church, Ardmore, OK. Interment will follow at 2:00 p.m. at the Burneyville Cemetery in Burneyville. The family will receive visitors at the Flanagan-Watts Funeral Home Chapel in Marietta, OK from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Tuesday.
Christine began her journey in life on February 19, 1936, in Wardville, OK. She was the daughter of John Thomas and Irene Gladys (Davis) Stroud. Due to unforeseen circumstances at a young age, she was raised by Dr. Ethel M. Walker. After graduating from Enterprise High School in Enterprise, KS, Christine attended nursing school at Southwestern Adventist College in Keene, TX and received her associate degree in nursing. She worked at the hospital in Odessa, TX and later became employed at the Ardmore Hospital. In September of 1962, she married Charles Dwayne Lain at the Lake Murray Chapel in Ardmore. He preceded her in death on March 15, 2021, after spending 59 years together. Over the years, as life changed, needs changed, and opportunity knocked, Christine began her career as a truck driver. "Country Girl" was her call sign as she made her way down the highways driving for a feed store, for Miller Trucking, and driving alongside her husband for several years.
Christine was a longtime member (the oldest member) of the Ardmore Seventh-Day Adventist Church. She loved attending the annual July camp meetings in the Wewoka woods. Christine loved the outdoors and relished in the time that the family spent on camping trips or excursions to the lake to water ski. Over the years, Christine also became quite the seamstress and cook. She could sew anything back together and was world famous for her signature "haystacks". Christine also spent countless hours in her gardens every year. When Christine wasn't on the road or working in the yard, you would likely find her sitting on the front porch, enjoying the company of her family and a few of her cats.
Christine was preceded in death by her parents; by her husband; by two sons, Raymond Lain and Charles Ed Lain; and by a sister, Shirley Gulley.
Those left to cherish her memory are her children, Rodney Lain of Burneyville, Cathy Arthur and significant other Mark Newell of Dickson, OK, and Ramona Duke of Saint Jo, TX; one sister, Mary Walker and her husband Bobby of Denton, TX; grandchildren, Elizabeth Bartling, Kellyn Lain, Brandon Case, Jake Arthur and wife Julie, Kyleigh Loewen and husband Alex, and Stetson Duke; great-grandchildren, Colt Bartley, T.J. Lindly, Jaklyn White, Jett Arthur, Jade Arthur, and William Barnes; and several nieces and nephews.
Casket bearers are Jake Arthur, Brandon Case, Stetson Duke, Thomas Lindly, Kenneth Duke, and Rodney Lain. Honorary bearers are Jack Holland, Harry Coleman, Bob Walker, Mark Newell, and John Lindly.
The family has requested that those who wish to make a memorial contribution in memory of Christine, remember the Burneyville Cemetery Fund.
