Richard Laymon Herndon

Richard Laymon Herndon, 74, of Powell, Oklahoma, passed away Monday, June 29, 2026, at the Family Care Center in Kingston, Oklahoma. Richard was born on February 6, 1952, in Madill, Oklahoma, to the late Hubert Laymon Herndon and Marie Millican Braudrick. He was raised in Kingston and graduated from Hirschi High School in Wichita Falls, Texas. On March 6, 1971, Richard married the love of his life, Phyllis Lynn Shelton, in Wichita Falls, Texas. Following their marriage, they made their home in Powell, where they lived for the remainder of their lives together.

Richard was an outstanding baseball player, primarily a pitcher, and received multiple achievements in the sport throughout high school. He worked for the family company, Herndon Construction. Following that, he became a truck driver for over 20 years. Later on becoming an armed security guard for the federal government, where he also earned multiple achievements. He was affiliated with the Powell Church of Christ. Richard enjoyed fishing and hunting, but nothing brought him greater joy than spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He will be remembered for his love of family, his strong work ethic, and the many memories he created with those he loved.

He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Phyllis Herndon of Powell, Oklahoma; his children, Kelly Herndon and wife T.J. of Sherman, Texas, Lori Adair and husband Jeff of Tulsa, Oklahoma, and Scott Herndon of Lebanon, Oklahoma; nine grandchildren, Ty Herndon and wife Devan, Ryan Herndon, Jaci Herndon, Kamri Adair, Justice Adair, Sophia Sedeh, Samuel Sedeh, Kennedy Herndon, Kooper Herndon; two great-grandchildren, Tyler Herndon and Raelyn Flatt; one brother, Randy Herndon and wife Beverly of Powell, Oklahoma; and two sisters, Betty Liz Rike of Rockwall, Texas, and Shirley Gates of Kingston, Oklahoma.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Ronnie Herndon; and one sister, Rita Fife.
