Obituary

Loyce Ethel Thompson Hixon was born on November 6, 1922, in Benton, Arkansas, to Saudy Young Thompson and Bertha Howard Thompson.  She moved to Mannsville, Oklahoma as a small child and attended Mannsville school. As a child, she played jax's on the Mannsville banks front steps, walked to school in the snow and even in the sand storms, and experienced the Tornado that took out the Mannsville School. She was a creative child; she made herself a vanity for her bedroom out of a nail bucket, wood grate and flour sacks. She traded flour sacks with friends, so she could get enough of the same material to make a dress. She had a great love of books and began reading them as a young child and would sneak to read late into the night. This love of books carried on throughout her life.  Her siblings called her "sangy", because she loved to sing as a child.  Ethel Graduated Valedictorian of her senior class and went to Business College in Ardmore, Oklahoma. After Business College, Ethel moved to Washington DC, and worked for the War Department. It was while in Washington, DC that she met a young Navy man named James Robert Hixon. The two were married on October 27, 1942, in Baltimore, Maryland.  The couple spent the next twenty years traveling with the military, living in France, Panama, and numerous states throughout the United States.  Ethel moved back to Mannsville, Oklahoma in January 1971, where she and Jim had purchased a grocery store in Mannsville, Oklahoma.   Ethel was active in the Republican party as a young mother in Whittier, California, she worked for the Simmons Company and also managed the family's Gas station and cleaning business, "Hixon's Quality Services."   It was in May of 1972, that her husband was killed in a vehicle accident, leaving her to raise their four younger children.  Ethel remained true to her marriage for the rest of her life, telling her grandchildren that she married her husband and those vows were for a lifetime.  Ethel remained in Mannsville, Oklahoma until 1989. While living in Mannsville, she worked for the Chickasaw Library and later for the town of Mannsville. In 1989, she moved to Lawton, Oklahoma with her Son Robert T. Hixon and she spent the next twenty-five years traveling the country, with him and his children as he served in the United States Army.

Ethel leaves a large legacy of children, grandchildren and great grandchildren who will always mourn her passing. She will be remembered as a strong woman, who instilled in her children a great faith in God, and a hard work ethic.  A woman who made special meals for her children, just because.  She is survived by her Son Robert T. Ethel loved her family and her greatest joy was to sit in her living room watching Shepard's Chapel, looking through pictures of her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Her walls were always covered with their pictures, more than that she always had them covered in her heart and in her prayers.  She will be remembered as a strong, loving mother who always put her faith in God, instilled in her children that "two wrongs do not make a right" loved everyone she met, was an avid reader and fantastic cook.  As she started writing to her husband while he was at sea during WWII and continued to write on every letter, she sent her children.  Her children now say to her "Momma we love you Oceans and Oceans, with kisses upon every wave.
