Obituary

Larry Scott Long was born on July 17, 1942, in Friona, TX to Ernest Carl and Frances Aley (Scott) Long. He passed away on Tuesday, January 9, 2024, at the Texoma Healthcare Center in Sherman, TX, at the age of 81.

Larry moved to the Addington Bend area of Love County, OK at the age of six months in January 1943. He continued living in the Thackerville, OK area until 1956, when he moved to Wewoka, OK until 1957, then he moved back to Thackerville until 1960. He had attended the Thackerville Schools from first through eighth grade, then attended Wewoka Schools for the ninth grade, and finished at Thackerville through his senior year in 1960.

Larry enlisted with the United States Army at Dallas, TX on July 29, 1960. A few of the achievements he obtained were the Expert Rifle M-14 and a Code of Conduct Medal. He served during the Vietnam Conflict and had also been stationed in Germany with the 24th Infantry and at the Air Defense Center at Fort Bliss in El Paso, TX. Larry was transferred to the Army Reserve on his birthday, July 17, 1963, at Fort Hamilton, NY, where he served out his military career until he was honorably discharged from the United States Army.

Larry moved back to Thackerville after his military career and lived in several locations, including Lake Ray Roberts in Texas before it was even there, then Oklahoma City, OK, and Bonham, TX. He then moved to Sherman, TX for 14 years, where he attended Grayson County College and studied auto mechanics, auto repair and diesel mechanics. Larry received his degree from Grayson County College in 1975. In 1980, Larry decided to move to Gainesville, TX, before eventually moving back to his hometown of Thackerville in 1983, where he lived until his death.

Larry enjoyed woodworking, body repair and painting, and he used these hobbies and skills in many of the jobs he worked. He had worked for several companies including US Brass, OKC LTV Airplanes, Corecom Pipe Company, Etter Cotton Gin, Burlington Industries, Kiser Aluminum, National Supply and Ozanis, before "in Larry's words" becoming "blissfully retired" in 2015 to present.

He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Ardmore.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, James E. Long.

Those left to cherish Larry's memory are his son, Justin Long and wife Natalie of Bonham, TX; and grandchildren, Nikki and Jay.

Funeral services for Larry were at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 17, 2024, at the Flanagan-Watts Funeral Home Chapel in Marietta with Bishop Danny Marting officiating. Interment with military honors followed at the Seaman First Class Billy Turner Oklahoma State Veteran's Cemetery in Ardmore, OK.
