Jimmie Lynn Thompson, known to family and friends as Jim, of the Falconhead Community in Burneyville, OK, passed away suddenly on August 4, 2026, while recovering from an illness. He was 81.

Born August 22, 1944, in Hardtner, KS, to James Leon and Margaret Edna (Schwerdtfeger) Thompson. Jim was the oldest of six children. He had three brothers—Benny, Danny, and Monty (all deceased)—and two sisters, Sheila and Phoebe. He graduated from Capron High School in 1962 and earned a B.S. in Biology and Chemistry from Northwestern Oklahoma State College in Alva in 1966.

On December 27, 1964, he married Barbara Jocile George. Their daughter Patricia was born in 1965. The family moved to Kansas City, KS, in 1966, where he trained at the University of Kansas Medical Center, and in July 1967 became a Certified Registered Medical Technologist (MT(ASCP)). In July of 1967 he began a long career with Ash Grove Cement Company as a laboratory chemist, rising to Technical Services Manager before retiring in 2005. The family settled in Overland Park, KS, in 1970, where their son Michael was born in 1971. In the early 1980s, Jim completed additional coursework at Johnson County Community College, finishing one economics class short of a B.S. in Civil Engineering from the University of Kansas.

Jim was deeply involved in Scouting. When Michael advanced from Cub Scouts to Boy Scouts in 1982, Jim volunteered as camping chairman for five years, organizing monthly trips for a troop of 25–30 teens. In 1985 he and Michael were inducted into the Tribe of Mic-O-Say, with Jim as an Honorary Warrior; his tribal name was Big Swift Spirited Silver Wolf. That same year he guided Michael to the rank of Eagle Scout. In 1986 Jim served as Adult Crew Advisor (with Michael as Crew Lead) for a 105-mile, 10-day Philmont Scout Ranch trek in northern New Mexico. In 1987 he advised a crew that canoed more than 100 miles through Minnesota’s Boundary Waters. Even after Michael left for college, Jim continued mentoring young men to Eagle and participated in another Philmont expedition. His grandsons, Winston MacCail Thompson (born 1997) and Marten Wallace Thompson (born 2002), both later earned the rank of Eagle Scout. Michael and Winston repeated the Philmont trek 26 years after Jim’s original trip.

Professionally, Jim contributed extensively to the concrete industry. He served on the Midwest Concrete Industry Board from 1975 to 2005 (president 1993–1994) and as president of the Kansas Chapter of the American Concrete Institute in 1985. He was a lead judge at multiple concrete canoe races in Manhattan, KS, throughout the 1980s and early 1990s. His honors included the Marlin J. Knutson Technical Achievement Award (1999) from the American Concrete Paving Association, election as a Fellow of the American Concrete Institute (2005), and the Lifetime Achievement Award (2006) from the Kansas/Missouri Chapter of the American Concrete Paving Association. Jim was nearly fired for recommending the use of asphalt as a base under concrete for highway construction—a method that has since been widely adopted.

After retiring in 2005, Jim and Barbara built a CONCRETE home next to the 17th fairway at Falconhead. They became avid bird watchers and helped establish the local Audubon Society group. Jim enjoyed golf and the nearby lake, teaching his younger grandson to fish and to drive a golf cart. The Falconhead Board of Directors later recognized Jim and Barbara with a plaque in the clubhouse entrance for their leadership in securing the votes, block by block, to renew the FPOA covenants—an effort that required months of intensive work at significant personal expense and was described as the greatest achievement in the development’s first 50 years. Jim also spearheaded and personally funded the construction of a new Falconhead Memorial. For almost two decades he volunteered as an advisor helping community members enroll in Medicare prescription drug coverage.

Jim was a man of tremendous faith. He believed in a personal relationship with his Savior, Jesus Christ, and held that true religion was a matter of that relationship rather than denominations or buildings. He studied the inerrant Word of God for guidance and direction, and he sought to emulate and instill servant leadership in those around him.

Jim is survived by his wife of nearly 62 years, Barbara; his children, Patricia and husband Dave and Michael and wife Wendi; grandsons, Winston and Marten; sisters, Sheila and Phoebe; many extended family members and friends who valued his steady guidance, quiet leadership, and love of the outdoors and community.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers Benny, Danny, and Monty.

Visitation will be from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 9, 2026, at Flanagan-Watts Funeral Home in Marietta. Graveside services will be held 11:00 a.m. on Monday, August 10, 2026, at the Capron Cemetery in Capron, OK, with Bro. Brett Alberda officiating and Les Bussell assisting. Following the service, there will be fellowship and lunch at the Capron Volunteer Fire Department Community Center.
