James Franklin Moffett, 80, of Marietta, OK, was born on October 15, 1943, in Waynesboro, MS, to Benjamin and Masie (Williams) Moffett. He passed from this life on Saturday, February 10, 2024, at his Marietta residence.
James graduated high school in Clara, MS in 1961. He moved to Pascagoula, MS in 1962 and worked at Ingalls Shipyard for two years. He went to work for Southwestern Bell Telephone Company until 1978.
He moved to Marietta, OK, and purchased the Hub Restaurant. He also owned the Delta Queen in Gainesville, TX, and the Terrace Inn in Ardmore, OK for a while. James had his own airplane and flew to Mississippi to get his seafood for the restaurant. He loved flying.
James served on the Marietta City Council for two and a half years and served as the mayor for 12 years. He also served on several boards, including SODA, the Marietta hospital, and the Naomi House in Ardmore. James was a member of the Marietta Lions Club and volunteered at the Love County Historical Society Museum.
He married the former Sherry Wilson in 1994. They resided in Marietta with her three children.
James sold the Hub Restaurant in 1999 and he went on to work at Red River Ford and Billingsley Ford. His last job before retiring was with AllState Pest Control. He was a member and deacon of the T.L.C. Church in Ardmore. James loved people and he loved the Lord. His favorite scripture was Isaiah 40:31, "but they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint."
The family would like to give a sincere thanks to Cross Timbers Hospice for their loving and compassionate care.
He is preceded in death by his father, Benjamin Moffett; mother, Masie Langley; stepmother, Friede Teichman; grandparents, Bernie and Ruth Street; sisters, Dale Palmer and Dorothy Jean McCary.
Left to cherish James's memory are his wife, Sherry Moffett of the home; sons, Anthony Moffett and wife Robin, Richard Hinton and John Hinton; daughters, Belinda Chaney and Mandy Berryhill and husband Jeremy; eight grandchildren; six great grandchildren; brothers, Michael Sellers and wife Belinda, Joe Sellers, Donald Sellers and wife Tammy, Danny Sellers and wife Alzada, Ed Moffett and Joe Moffett; sisters, Rebecca Pacey, Joann McLain, Louise Williams, Angie Mills, Joannie Parker and husband Jeff and Ann Foxworth and husband Louis.
A memorial service is scheduled at 2:00 p.m., Monday, February 26, 2024, at the TLC Church, 928 Lake Murray Drive, Ardmore, with Pastor Rhonda Howard officiating and Pastor Brendon Lee assisting. Cremation services are under the direction of Flanagan-Watts Funeral Home and Cremation Services in Marietta.
