Obituary

Frances Lucille "Lu" Thompson Deringer, 98, of Mannsville, Oklahoma, passed away on Tuesday, October 31, 2023, at the family home surrounded by loved ones.

Lu was born October 2, 1925, to Saudy Young Thompson and Bertha Beatrice Howard Thompson in Alamo, Colorado. She was raised in Mannsville and is a graduate of Mannsville School and Murray State College. In 1943, she moved to Washington, DC, immediately after high school to work in support of the war effort. She later met and married career Air Force serviceman William Duncan Deringer, Jr. They traveled extensively and lived all over the country until his retirement in 1966, at which time they returned to Mannsville. Lu spent the last thirty years of her professional life at American Flyers in Ardmore and later at Murray State College.

Lu was always active, quick-witted and full of laughter; proclaiming that "if you rest, you rust" she went on long walks every day until near the very end. She was an avid bowler, impressing her grandchildren with her collection of trophies. She was never without either a crossword puzzle, or novel, or both. She loved music and mysteries. Lu was a member of the Mannsville Methodist Church and a long-time RSVP volunteer at Mercy Hospital.

She is survived by her children, Linda Jeanne Deringer of Lake Bridgeport, Texas; William Duncan Deringer and wife Jayne of Mannsville; and Edmon Thompson Deringer of Veguita, New Mexico; seven grandchildren and their families; and four great-grandchildren. Her numerous nieces, nephews, and their families also mourn her loss. Special thanks to her niece, Becky Broughton, for her invaluable presence during this time.

Lu was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and eight siblings.

Memorials may be made to the Mannsville Cemetery Fund, CrossTimbers Hospice, or the charity of your choice.
