Frances Charlene
Howerton
December 3, 1941 – January 26, 2024
Frances "Charlene" Howerton was born on December 3, 1941, in Jimtown, OK to Jacob "Jake" Elias and Bessie Mae (Kirk) Gordon. She passed away on Friday, January 26, 2024, at the Mercy Hospital in Ardmore, at the age of 82.
Charlene lived most of her life in Love County, and enjoyed fishing, reading, gardening, and canning her own vegetables, and watching the Dallas Mavericks, Texas Rangers, and the Oklahoma Sooners. She was a faithful member of the Jimtown Baptist Church. More than anything, she loved watching her kids, grandkids and great-grandkids playing ball.
Charlene was a worker, and she worked hard her entire life. She wore numerous hats, and the one she loved wearing the best was being an employee of Turner Schools. She had worked in the kitchen, as an aide, and retired from Turner Schools as a secretary. She crossed many paths while employed there and would do anything for the children at Turner.
She married David Royce Howerton on February 11, 1963. They had three children together and enjoyed everything about being with their family. David preceded Charlene in death on June 20, 2014.
Charlene was preceded in death by her parents; husband; son, Brent Howerton; brother and sister-in-law, Bill Cooper and wife Carolyn; and sisters-in-law, Betty Jo Gordon, Sandra, Dixie, and Betty.
Those left to carry on Charlene's legacy include her children, R.J. Howerton and wife Cheryl of Whitesboro, TX, and Vikki Hallum and husband Greg of Rubottom, OK; daughter-in-law, Tanya Howerton of Calera, OK; grandchildren, Avery Howerton, Evan Howerton, Steven Doggett and wife Amanda, Bree Hallum and Ryan, Ally Howerton and Aaron; great-grandchildren, Luke, Case, Reed, Palmer, Maizey, Harrison, and Oliver; brother, Johnny Gordon of Jimtown, OK; numerous nieces and nephews; and a special nephew, Joe Gordon.
Funeral services for Charlene will be at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, February 1, 2024, at the Flanagan-Watts Funeral Home Chapel in Marietta with Rev. Ron Elmore officiating. Interment will follow at the Leon Cemetery in Leon, OK. A time of visitation will be held on Tuesday, January 30, from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. at the Flanagan-Watts Funeral Home in Marietta.
Serving as casket bearers will be her nephews, Chet Downs, Ty Downs, Timothy Downs, Joe Gordon, Jay Gordon, and Kurt Gordon. Honorary casket bearers will be Larry and Gayle Hicks, Carolyn Hartman, Sherry Rhoades, Mary Hicks, Dewayne Black, Marsha Higgins, Jeff Hicks, Kent Foster, and her Cross Timber Hospice girls, Rhedonna, KK and Nickie.
