Obituary

October 22, 1949 to November 24, 2023

Elizabeth Weldon, 74, of Ardmore, Oklahoma, passed away on Friday, November 24, 2023.

Liz was born to Jack and Cynthia Weldon on October 22, 1949 in Ardmore, Oklahoma. After she graduated from Putnam City High School, she studied Elementary Education at Philips University.

She began her career as a teacher at St. John Catholic School in Bartlesville, Oklahoma and subsequently held positions at Graham and Dougherty Public Schools and Ardmore Head Start. Liz spent some years outside of the field of Education, working as Director of the Southern Oklahoma Development Association and the Ardmore Day Nursery, but returned to teaching in the mid-1980s when she joined the faculty at Lone Grove Public Schools, where she taught in the Elementary School until her retirement in 2020. She was especially proud to have been named Teacher of the Year (1996-1997).

Liz touched untold students, many of whom considered her their favorite teacher, inspiring some of them to enter the Education field. She mentored student teachers and helped newly minted teachers find their footing. She was especially skilled at making all the children in her classes feel special, developing their critical thinking skills, and fostering a classroom environment of respect.

Extremely creative, Liz enjoyed crafting personal and meaningful gifts, playing games, and reading, but she was happiest spending time with friends and family, including her beloved dogs T-Bone, GiGi, and TuTu. Devoted to her nieces, nephews, and grandnieces and nephews, Liz crisscrossed the country attending graduations, weddings, and births to show her unwavering support.

All who knew Liz will miss her beautiful smile, her considerate and generous nature, her fierce loyalty, and her dry sense of humor, including the clever one-liners that made so many laugh.

Liz was preceded in death by her father, Jack Clinton Weldon and her mother, Cynthia Sanders Weldon. She is survived by her sisters Emoline W. Ellis and Lynn Weldon, nieces and nephews Aimee Dars Ellis (George Nosis), Ryan Clinton Gilbert (Jodi), Jeffrey Thomas Gilbert (Stephanie), Kelli Lynn Cline (Chris), grandnieces Ysabel, Jordin, Gracelyn, Reese, and Josslyn, grandnephew Monroe Erebout, and a bouquet of long-time friends.

All are welcome to attend Liz's funeral service which will be held Saturday, December 2 at 2:00 p.m. at Flanagan-Watts Funeral Home in Marietta, Oklahoma with interment to follow in Lakeview Cemetery. Liz wants this to be a joyous celebration of her life and requests that those attending wear her favorite colors, pink and green.

The family will receive visitors 6:00-8:00 p.m. on Friday, December 1 at the Flanagan-Watts Funeral home in Marietta.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Ardmore Animal Shelter.
