Services for Douglas Joseph "Doug" Harper of Midwest City, OK, will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, May 18, 2020, in the Flanagan-Watts Funeral Home Chapel of Marietta, with Brent & Martha Spell officiating. Interment will follow in the Lakeview Cemetery, Marietta, OK under the direction of Flanagan-Watts Funeral Home & Cremation Services.
Doug was born on August 28, 1934 to Joseph E. Johnston and Elsie Mae (Hawkins) Harper in Maysville, Oklahoma. He passed away on Friday, May 15, 2020, at Bellevue Health & Rehabilitation Center in Oklahoma City, OK at the age of 85.
Doug grew up in Purcell, OK and moved to Edmond, OK, then onto Shawnee, OK, before settling in at Midwest City. He married Arzella Mae Allison on November 2, 1961 in Marietta and she preceded him in death on March 28, 1991. Doug worked as a mortician in Purcell for years before changing gears and learning to weld. He worked for Clarence Boyd & Ditch Witch of Oklahoma as welder. Doug was a very organized man who spent a lot of time in his shop and he appreciated the craft of welding. He created all kinds of gadgets. Doug was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed spending time in his garden, hunting and loved to fish. His favorite pastime was taking his kids and grandkids on fishing trips.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three wives, Arzella Mae Allison-Harper, Elsie Troutman-Harper, and Dorothy Carter-Harper; and two sisters, Mary Snow and Laverne Beach.
Survivors include his son, Durwyn Douglas Harper and his wife Lisa of Arcadia, OK; three grandchildren, Rebecca Harper, Courtney Moore and husband Cody, and Clayton Harper; and several nieces and nephews.
Serving as pallbearers are Brent Spell, Kent Shankles, Rodney Spell, Clayton Harper, Tim Wishon, and Cody Moore. Honorary bearers are Brandon Spell, Kyler Spell, and Logan Spell.
Time for visitation for family and friends will be Monday from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
