Donald Ray Powers, 89, of Kingston, Oklahoma, passed away peacefully on Thursday, August 1, 2024, at Alliance Hospital in Madill, Oklahoma. Born on July 25, 1935, in Inola, Oklahoma, to Henry Mordith Powers and Milton Elizabeth Fleming Powers, Don lived a life dedicated to education, community, and family.

Don's early years were spent in the close-knit community of Inola, where he attended all 12 years of school, graduating from Inola High School in 1953. His passion for sports led him to Panhandle State University, where he played football, basketball, and baseball from 1953 to 1958. Don was not only a dedicated athlete but also an enthusiastic student. He went on to earn a master's degree in education science from Southwestern State University in 1967.

In 1955, Don married Alma Lee Little, in Goodwell, Oklahoma. Their marriage was a partnership in every sense, full of love, support, and shared adventures. Together, they raised three children following them to sporting and school events from elementary through college touching countless lives through their work and community involvement.

Don's commitment to education was evident in his career as a teacher and coach. He taught school and coached football and girls' basketball in Balko and Boise City, Oklahoma, and Springfield, Colorado. One of his proudest accomplishments was starting the football program in Balko, Oklahoma, where he instilled in his students the values of teamwork, perseverance, and sportsmanship. His influence extended beyond the classroom and the playing field; he was a mentor and a friend to many, leaving a lasting impact on the lives he touched.

Beyond his work in education, Don was a man of many talents. He served on the Moscow School Board for 12 years and co-owned and operated Southwest Feedyard in Ulysses, Kansas for a decade. As an Agriculture Representative for Moorman's Manufacturing for 20 years, Don's deep connection to the land and his community shone through in all he did.

A lifelong member of the Methodist Church, Don's faith was central to his life. He was a man of strong moral principles and deep compassion, always ready to lend a helping hand or a listening ear. His dedication to his church and his community reflected the values he held dear throughout his life.

Don is survived by his beloved wife of nearly 69 years, Alma Lee Powers of Kingston, Oklahoma; his sons, Garwin Powers and his wife Marleta of Houston, Texas, Kenneth A. Powers of Kingston, Oklahoma; and his daughter, Ladona Mathis and her husband Shane of Beaver, Oklahoma; sister, Jean Demuth of Lakin, Kansas; and his sister-in-law, Joan Little of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. He was a proud grandfather to six grandchildren: Devin, Ashley, Colin, Austin Powers: Kaylee Mathis Love, and Michael Mathis: and a great-grandfather to eight: Jade, Paige, Bradlie, Kannon Powers; Caleb and Audrey Bush; and Carter and Landen Mathis.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother James Henry, daughter Cynthia Beth, granddaughter Alyssa Fae Powers and sister Ann Stratton.

Don will be remembered for his unwavering commitment to his family, his community, and his students. His legacy lives on in the lives he touched and the love he shared with those around him.
