Obituary

Donald "Donnie" Reese McCullough, 71, of Willis, Oklahoma, passed away on February 10, 2025 at home surrounded by his family. He was born on September 11, 1953, in Tracy, California to Reese and Nellie McCullough, who preceded him in death.

On December 30, 1971, Donnie married the love of his life, Phyllis Jean Rushing, in Gainesville, Texas. Together, they recently celebrated 53 years of marriage.

Donnie is survived by his devoted wife, Phyllis; daughter Christy and son-in-law Jordan Bull of Denton, TX, son Bubba McCullough of Willis, OK; grandchildren Matthew McCullough of Willis, OK, Nate and Allie Joyner of Winnsboro, TX, and Kadyn and Rylan Bull of Denton, TX; great-grandchildren Kyler McCullough and Jameson Joyner; nieces Tina Garner, Kathleen Chensky, and Shannon Reynolds.  He also leaves behind many other beloved nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Rita McDearmon, and his grandsons Dylan McCullough and Sam Joyner.

Donnie grew up in Garland, TX, before moving to Kingston, OK, as a teenager. It was there that he earned the nickname "Smoke" and began a life filled with hard work and strong values. A master carpenter, he learned the trade from his brother-in-law, Jack McDearmon, and later built a successful career in construction. Donnie owned his own construction company for many years before joining Herndon Construction.  He dedicated over 50 years of his life to his craft and mentored many young carpenters passing on the craftsmanship and knowledge of his trade.

Donnie could be a bit of an ass sometimes—he was blunt, short-tempered, and didn't have much patience for nonsense. He could cuss like a sailor, but beneath that rough exterior he was the kind of man who would drop everything to help someone in need, whether it was fixing a broken-down truck, lending a hand on a project, or simply being there when it mattered most.

He was never one to sit in silence, you could always hear him humming a tune.  Some of his best moments were spent listening to old records with his sister, and that love for music stayed with him throughout his life.

In his younger days, Don loved to hit the dance halls, two-stepping the night away with Phyllis or whoever was willing to take a spin on the dance floor. He loved playing pool, camping, watching football, fishing, and working on cars.  He was an avid wrestling supporter, first cheering alongside his son Bubba and later sharing that tradition with his grandson Dylan. A natural problem-solver, Donnie had a gift for fixing anything and took pride in using his skills to help others.

Donnie will be deeply missed, but his spirit will remain forever in the hearts of those who loved him.

In lieu of flowers and in his honor, the family requests that donations be made to the Madill Wrestling Program, Attention Coach Pettigrew, 601 McArthur, Madill, OK 73446
