"Corky" Johnny
Thomas Cartwright
September 1, 1934 – December 11, 2024
Johnny Thomas "Corky" Cartwright, 90-year-old Burneyville, OK resident, passed away Wednesday, December 11, 2024, at his home while surrounded by his loving family. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, December 14, 2024, at the Burneyville Baptist Church with Greg Idell officiating. Interment will follow in the Burneyville Cemetery. A visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Services have been entrusted to the Flanagan-Watts Funeral Home in Marietta, OK.
Johnny was born on September 1, 1934, in Simon, OK to Philmon and Velma (Barrick) Cartwright. He grew up and attended school in Burneyville. Not long after graduating, Johnny married the love of his life, Koweta May Baker in August of 1954. The two spent a few years together before Johnny left in October of 1961 to serve his country in the United States Army. Johnny and Koweta have celebrated more than 70 years together.
Johnny retired from the Oklahoma Department of Transportation where he was a dump truck driver for many years on Interstate 35 around the Ardmore, OK area. He was a member of the Burneyville Baptist Church and the Burch Brothers American Legion Post 136 in Marietta. Johnny loved spending time outdoors camping, crappie fishing, deer hunting, and trapping. He became known as somewhat of a sharpshooter and loved to bird hunt with his dogs. In his later years, Johnny loved venturing out on the side-by-side to check cows. Many things brought him joy and contentment, but maybe none so much as spending time with his family at family gatherings and fish fries.
Johnny was preceded in death by his parents and by a brother, Harold Cartwright. Those left to cherish his memory are his wife Koweta of the home; sons, Johnny Lynn Cartwright and wife Susan of Burneyville, Alan Cartwright and wife Sheri of Hugo, OK, Josef Kelly Cartwright and wife Gayle of Burneyville, and Bryan E. Cartwright and wife Keli of Heavener, OK; grandchildren, Angela Robinson and husband Michael of Durant, OK, Brett Cartwright and wife Kayla of Noble, OK, Matt Cartwright and wife Jessica of Altus, OK, Broc Cartwright of Caddo, OK, Choc Cartwright and wife Macy of Bennington, OK, Josef Cartwright of Marietta, Ava Cartwright, Anistyn Cartwright and Addy Cartwright all of Heavener; great-grandchildren, Allison Jackson, Alyssa Carrillo, Gavin Cartwright, Reed Cartwright, Remi Cartwright, and Rori Cartwright.
Casket bearers are grandsons, Brett Cartwright, Broc Cartwright, Matt Cartwright, Choc Cartwright, Josef Cartwright, and nephew, Aaron Cartwright. Honorary bearers are Kathy Kester, Kim Goss, Jamie Cartwright, Claudia Harris, Kelly Harris, and Joe Baker.
The family has asked that those who wish to honor Johnny's memory through a donation, please remember the Burneyville Cemetery Fund.
