Obituary

A private graveside service with military honors will be held at McAlister Cemetery in rural Carter County, OK for Charlie Raymon "Buck" Stevens of Marietta, OK, with Clyde Lindsey officiating. Arrangements have been entrusted to Flanagan-Watts Funeral Home & Cremation Services of Marietta, OK.

Buck was born on October 17, 1922, in Waurika, OK, to Joseph Millage and Sara Alida (Robbins) Stevens. He passed away on Sunday, April 26, 2020 at his residence at the age of 97.

Buck spent most of his childhood between Texas and Love County, OK in the cotton fields. It wasn't until he was in his 20's when he decided he needed to join the United States Army Air Corp during World War II. In 1944, while stationed in Levanham, England, Buck flew 35 missions; 20 as a nose-gunner in a B-24 and 15 as a tail-gunner in a B-17. Two of those missions were completed on D-Day. For his service he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross Air Medal with three oak clusters (one for every ten missions), the Army Good Conduct Medal, America's Campaign Medal, European African Middle Eastern Medal, the World War II Victory Medal, an Overseas Bar, and four Bronze Battle Stars.

Buck married the love of his life Edith LaNell Shults on March 28, 1945 in Ft. Worth, TX. She preceded him in death on April 12, 2016. After his service, he worked in construction in Arkansas, Texas and Oklahoma. He helped build the Hospital in Ardmore then worked there as an orderly. Buck worked on a farm in Eastman, OK and drove a school bus for Meadowbrook School in the early 50's. In 1955 they moved to Texas where he worked as an aircraft mechanic for Lackland Airforce Base and Kelly Airforce Base, retiring in 1975 at the age of 53. After his retirement, Buck and LaNell traveled extensively and he served as a caretaker at the Jo-Jan-Van Girl Scout Camp near Camp Wood, TX. After retiring from the Girl Scout Camp, they made their home on the Nueces River near Camp Wood. In 2013 they moved back to Greenville, Oklahoma to enjoy the retirement. Buck was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed camping and fishing. He also enjoyed piddling in his shop either making bird feeders, doing carpentry or mechanical work. Buck loved to travel. One of his favorite destinations was the Texas Hill Country surrounding the Nueces River. He also traveled to the WWII Reunions with the 487 th Bomb Group that were held in different states every year. Buck was a family man who enjoyed spending time with his wife, kids, grandkids, great-grandkids, and great-great-grandkids. Going to Braum's and playing games were top on his list.

In addition to his wife and parents, he was also preceded in death by infant son, Roger Keith Stevens; brother, Loran Stevens; and sisters, Ozelle Hostetler, Marie Cunningham, and Ida Beatrice "Dude" Cunningham.

Survivors include a son, Gary Stevens and wife Beverly of Tecumseh, OK; daughters, Louise Harris and husband Lonnie of Ardmore, OK and Debra Siller and husband Lee of Greenville, OK; brother, Larry Stevens of Overbrook, OK; sister, Jo Scott of Skiatook, OK; nine grandchildren, Bryan, Scott, Michelle, Melissa, Rene, Chelsea, Ethan, Mason, and Neil; 13 great-grandchildren, Allen, Brooke, Harlie, Abby, Aiden, Charlie, Ethan, Clay, Rylee, Cash, Conner, Adric, and Arlis; three great-great-grandchildren, Kaeden, Lillie, and Logan; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Serving as honorary bearers are Henry Dennis, Russell Stevens, Stanley Stevens, Randy Stevens, Roy Cunningham, Mark Hill, Bryan Bronder, Scott Bronder, Ethan Stevens, Stephen Shults, Tim Hostetler.

Time of viewing for family and friends will be Wednesday, April 29 th from 10:00 AM to 5:00PM at the funeral home.
