Obituary

Betty F. (Hay) Brownfield, age 77, passed away peacefully September 29, 2023, surrounded by her loving family, at peace with a life well lived and secure in the knowledge of a joyful reunion with her beloved husband Coy and Savior Jesus Christ.

Born November 18, 1945, in Madill, Oklahoma, to Leonard and Francis (McHargue) Hay, she graduated from Hugo High school and was married to Coy Brownfield in 1963.

After moving to Oklahoma City, she enjoyed an active life raising her children and serving in her community. Beginning as a Girl Scout Leader of the only integrated Brownie Scout troop in OKC in the early 1970s and again working as a scout leader and Sunday school teacher in Harrah in the mid 1970s, Betty continually lived out a life dedicated to helping others.  She worked as a medical assistant, secretary, grocery cashier and school bus driver while going to college in order to complete her education with a Masters degree in Elementary Education. Betty worked for over 22 years as a 4th grade teacher, influencing thousands of students, parents and co-teachers.  She was voted Teacher of the Year for Harrah Public Schools in 1993, served as local OEA union representative for several years, was an instructor for the Great Expectations model teacher method and a staunch supporter of public education.  Betty was a faithful Christian and member of the church of Christ, living her life as an example of a Godly wife and mother.

In her retirement years, Betty enjoyed traveling with Coy previous to his death in 2011, at which time she moved to the Moore and Norman area, enjoying many years of bingo, cards and social activities at the Moore Senior Center and at her independent living apartment in Norman.  One of her favorite activities was walking across the street to Braums for strawberry ice cream and down the street to McDonald's for a medium coffee with four creams and an egg biscuit.  Betty was passionate about OU football, George Strait and her grandchildren, not necessarily in that order.

She was preceded in death by her husband Coy Brownfield, her parents and siblings Ernest, Tommy and Raymond Hay, Lynda (Hay) Wilkie and Troy Chumley; sisters and brothers-in-law, Jane and Jacque Hay, David L. Wilkie, Everett, Cecil and Floyd Brownfield and Billy Taylor.

Betty is survived by a daughter and her husband, Becky and Jim Maddox of Fort Worth Texas, a son and his wife, Steve and Melanie Brownfield of Norman, Oklahoma. Grandchildren Jared Maddox, Joe and wife Cynthia Maddox, Lizzy and husband Erick Villarreal, Victoria Maddox, Alec Brownfield, Atticus Brownfield and Jeremiah Brownfield as well as two great-grandchildren, Layla Maddox and Damien Villarreal. Other survivors include a sister, Elsie Sheppard of Dickinson, Texas, brother-in-law, Punchie Brownfield & wife Debbie, sisters-in-law Geneva Taylor, Phyllis Hay, Cleda, Betty L. and Linda Brownfield as well numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends. Betty was particularly close to Gannon, Mitzi, Chloe, Cobe and Ethan Hargrave, who she considered to be her surrogate grandchildren.
